One of the most insipid characteristics of globalization is the utter alienation it has created between citizens and their capital, communities, civic agency and our collective power. Civil organizations are working in a focused effort in a variety of public engagement campaigns to get out the vote, to make poverty history to rebirth democratic debate and civic participation.
As the song goes we are “waiting on the the world to change”. Thankfully more and more people around the world who have had their freedom corrupted by the politics of fear and corporate militarism are no longer just “waiting”. We are standing up and speaking out by the millions.
There is more we can do than just “wait”. You can invest in your community by buying products from your local co-op or by banking at a credit union, sign up to Make Poverty History, wear a whiteband, call your elected politician, buy fair trade .
We don’t have to wait on the world to change… we can make it change… in our every day lives… in our own communities.
